Australian Standards
What are Australian Standards?
Standards Australia is an independent company, not directly associated
with government. While not directly linked to government, a Memorandum
has existed between Standards Australia and the Commonwealth Government
since 1988 that recognizes Standards Australia as the peak non-government
standards body in Australia .
One of the principal activities of Standards Australia is the
development of technical and business standards.
"A Standard is a published document which sets out specifications
and procedures designed to ensure that a material, product, method
or service is fit for its purpose and consistently performs the
way it was intended to."
Standards published around the world are prepared by Technical
Committees, consisting of many different and sometimes opposed
interests, which arrive at a general agreement on the content and
requirements of a Standard. There are currently over 6,000 Australian
Standards maintained by approximately 9,000 voluntary experts serving
on around 1,700 technical committees, supported by a full-time
staff of 280.
Standards Australia an independent organization, and their Standards
are not legal documents. But many of them are actually called up
in Federal or State legislation, and then become mandatory. Currently
about 2400 of the Standards are mandatory.
Standards are also commonly used by organisations responsible
for professional accreditation. It may also be appropriate to check
your position with regard to your public liability insurance and
compliance with the Australian Standards applicable to sterilisation.
Which Standards apply to Sterilisation?
The Standards of primary importance to sterilisation using bench
top sterilisers include those listed below. This is not an exhaustive
list but includes the Standards of major significance in most practices.
It is important for you to be familiar with the requirements of
these Standards and we recommend that you obtain your own copy
of relevant Standards from Standards Australia. Please feel free
to discuss this matter with any of our technical staff.
